On Friday, Mexico celebrates its independence with parades, music and fireworks.

No, it isn’t Cinco de Mayo (that’s May 5, literally), though some Americans get the holidays confused.

Mexico’s Independence Day commemorates Sept. 16, 1810, when Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla urged Mexicans to rise up against the Spanish-born ruling class.
